Reworking the Existing Cowgirl
Not every cover-up tattoo needs to completely hide the original work. On the front of this sleeve, the existing cowgirl still had a composition worth keeping, but the tattoo had become faded and visually disconnected from the rest of the arm.
Rather than covering her, Abby reworked the original cowgirl, strengthening the linework, shading and details while preserving the existing design. She then incorporated a large eagle across the shoulder, using the new imagery and stronger contrast to frame the cowgirl and connect her to the rest of the sleeve.
This is an important part of approaching older tattoos: sometimes a tattoo doesn’t need to disappear. With the right design, it can become part of something much stronger.
Covering the Old Tattoo with a Tiger
On the other side of the arm, Abby covered an existing cloud and cupcake with a tiger, using its bold shapes, stripes and natural contrast to disguise the old tattoo without making the new piece unnecessarily dark.
She paired the tiger with a traditional heart frame and dot details, helping connect the new cover-up with the rest of the arm. She also reworked and refreshed parts of the existing lower arm so that the older tattoos and new additions would feel like one cohesive piece.
The goal was not simply to hide the old tattoo, but to make the entire arm feel intentional and visually connected from front to back.
Reworking the Rest of the Sleeve
The project wasn’t limited to covering individual tattoos. Much of the existing sleeve was still usable, but the different pieces no longer felt cohesive.
Abby kept elements that could be worked with, added new details, strengthened areas that had faded and refreshed the lower arm rather than unnecessarily covering everything. New work on the upper arm helped connect the existing tattoos into a more intentional composition.
For tattoo cover-ups and tattoo reworks in Montreal, the goal isn’t always to erase every trace of the original tattoo. Sometimes the strongest solution is a combination of covering, reworking and integrating existing pieces into a new composition.
